How Do Cannabinoids and Terpenes Work Together?

With so much selection available at your local Ferndale dispensary, it can be difficult to find which cannabis products have what you’re looking for. Understanding how the different active ingredients in cannabis work is helpful in making the right decision for your needs. Read on for some information on how two of the most prominent compounds in cannabis, cannabinoids and terpenes, interact with one another and with your body.

What Are Cannabinoids?

The term cannabinoid refers to a class of compounds found in the cannabis plant that are the primary cause of the plant’s psychoactive effects. There are more than 400 different compounds found in the cannabis plant, and of these, around 60 are cannabinoids. These compounds interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system to create the effects that cannabis users are familiar with.

The best-known cannabinoid is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, known more commonly as THC. This creates the “high” that the cannabis plant can bring and psychoactive effects in the user. There are other cannabinoids, too, such as cannabidiol, which can further enhance the effects of THC.

What Are Terpenes?

Terpenes are naturally occurring compounds produced in many plants, including the cannabis plant. The aromatic and flavorful nature of these compounds has long been understood, but as our understanding of cannabis increases, we are starting to get a better understanding of how the various terpenes found in the plant affect cannabis users.

Different terpenes can have different active effects on the user. For example, Indica-dominant strains tend to have plentiful amounts of the terpene myrcene, which is known for the calming, soothing effects it provides. On the other hand, terpenes such as limonene and pinene are known for the euphoric, blissful state they can induce in a user and are more commonly found in Sativa-dominant strains of cannabis. The Entourage Effect

The concept of synergy tells us that something can amount to more than just the sum of its parts, and this principle holds true in the cannabis plant. The different compounds working together create effects that are different from what any one of the given compounds might do on their own. This synergistic relationship between the different compounds of the cannabis plant is also known as the entourage effect.

Because of the important role the entourage effect can play in the effects of a given cannabis product, it’s important to go by more than just the amount of THC when determining which product you’re interested in. Talking to a cannabis expert will help you understand the full extent of what’s found in a given cannabis product. This helps you find a product that is tailored to suit your unique individual needs.
